Information Literacy Coordinator Librarian, W.I Dykes Library University of Houston Downtown
My name is Jovanni Lota; I am a Information Literacy Coordinator Librarian at the University of Houston downtown. Wait, did I just see a smirk? Yes, that’s right, I said LIBRARIAN; but no, I don’t spend the majority of my day reading; I don’t ssshhhhh people often; I don't wear my hair in a bun; I don't wear glasses; I do however love cardigans, especially the oatmeal colored ones. Oh and no, I don’t just sit at my desk pointing to books if that’s what you’re thinking. If you really want to know; my basic duties consist of teaching students how to research, how to develop basic research skills, and how to use critical thinking skills in and out of the classroom. I teach about two classes a day; In addition, I order books for the ethnic studies, philosophy, and the religious studies department here on campus. I also help library patrons with any questions or concerns they may have when I’m on the reference desk or when they use virtual reference tools. I plan events and presentations for the library, and every summer I have the privilege of introducing our incoming freshman and transfer students to our library and our library resources’. But the coolest part of my job is getting paid to eat popcorn, watch movies, or play Rock Band 3, Just Dance 2, or Super Mario carts at our monthly movie and game days. I have an awesome job if I do say so myself! But most importantly, I love being able to connect students with the information they need. There’s no better feeling then to have a student come back and tell me they aced their paper. I make micro changes and those micro changes make a difference at the end of the day and its pretty darn fulfilling. If you're interested in learning more about librarianship please contact me.
