College Archivist at Spelman College

Atlanta , GA
I’m an archivist. In a nutshell, archivists work to provide access and manage use of historical documents and materials in various settings, such as a library or museum. I'm thrilled to say I am the College Archivist at Spelman College - one of the most well known historically black colleges that have served young women since it's founding in 1881. I mainly work to facilitate better access to archival collections related to Spelman College and the college's community. I get to work various, interesting projects. I help students, faculty, staff, and the community discover and use materials about Spelman College history, alumnae, and the surrounding community. I talk with people about donating materials to the archives. I teach classes of undergraduates and graduates and help them think about history in new innovative ways. Working with different institutions and community organizations, I curate exhibitions, create workshops, and speak at conference. I work to help change the concept of how archivist preserve and present African American history. As a result, researchers, scholars, and other users get a better understanding of how to use archival materials and gain a broader view of African American history. I love what I do, and I love working with people. It is a true honor and privilege to work to uncover the stories of the community and the ancestors. I would love to talk more with you about my journey to librarianship.
